A Birthday Bash and Ponding!

This week, we celebrated the awesome husband and Daddy in our life.  We think he's pretty stinkin' AMAZING and of course we honored him in true Ghanaian fashion.  (cause you know...when in Rome Ghana, do as the Ghanaians do!)

As it turns out, Don spent his birthday "giving birth" to the Ghanaian side of Vytrak (the US side of Vytrak has been established for a couple months).  He spent his morning beating the clock to get some paperwork done and submitted to the Ghanaian registrars office to establish Vytrak Ghana as an official recognizable entity by the government here.  He's been in this process for a couple months but was really trying to push it through to completion before we leave.  (Plus it's super cool that Vytrak Ghana will have the same birthday as its founder!  ;)  )  So anyway, this involved last minute signatures, traveling around the city, waiting in a government office, then getting stuck in 2 hour slow moving traffic to get home.

After a long day, he arrived home to his birthday bash!  After attending a friends birthday a couple weeks ago, the kids and I found out that when its someone's birthday in Ghana, the birthday person goes through a certain ritual called "ponding."  Ponding is when everyone gets to soak the birthday person with water.  Since Don was unaware of this Ghanaian tradition, the kids were quite excited to surprise him with his first introduction...and of course they got the cold water sachets out of the fridge!

He was such a good sport!  :)

It has become a new Ghana birthday tradition in our family that all birthday celebrations be during "lights out" (no power).  Don's was no exception but we didn't let that slow us down.  We had lanterns, flashlights, and glow sticks for all.  The kids had all made him cards, drawn pictures of the Star Wars movie and snacks they were going to buy him in the States, and then put on his very own "Go Browns" (as in Cleveland Browns) football game.  (Incidentally, the Browns played the 49ers in our birthday exhibition).  They had spent most of the afternoon planning and practicing their football game.  There were tickets, concessions, an opening theme song recorded on the IPad, opposing uniforms, and an announcer/score keeper.  It was quite cute although I think Don spent most of the game hoping there wouldn't be any cracked heads on the dark "field".   Afterwards, we enjoyed his birthday dinner of fried chicken nuggets, french fries, coleslaw and snicker doodles + fan ice (ice cream) for dessert.

The Football players (Browns vs 49ers)  Chloe lost her jersey but decided it didn't matter in the dark!
It was a great celebration and a great guy to celebrate!!!  We are so so thankful for him!

  1. I have not been on the internet for awhile to do anything other than email, so I was shocked to discover several postings that I had missed. I sat here and basked in each one and am praising God that we will see you soon. What a joy to read about your life in Ghana and to see the children living out a life of service to our Risen Savior along with their parents. We are so thankful for you. We love you so much!!!!
